Bríd Rodgers, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development to-day welcomed the specific help given by District Councils in providing manpower to maintain the controls around the Newry and Mourne District Council area. This timely help has allowed a small number of Forest Service staff to return to forestry duty and start getting Tollymore and Castlewellan Forests ready for opening on Thursday 12 April 2001.
Chief Executive Malcolm Beatty said:-
"Many people have been asking when the Forest Parks will be reopening. I know they are looking forward to their traditional visit to Tollymore or Castlewellan this Easter, and we are delighted to be able to open these sites in time."
Visitors are advised that due to the fact that Forest Service staff have been involved in duties combating Foot and Mouth Disease, therefore some quality standards maybe less than would be normal. In addition to the usual compliance with the guidelines on Foot and Mouth, visitors should:
Keep to the paths
Keep dogs on a lead
Take litter home with them, especially any foodstuffs.
