The agriculture sector faces many challenges in the future and I am encouraged to see a resilient local industry continuing to stage shows which act as showpieces. said Bríd Rodgers, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, today during a visit to Castlewellan Show.
The Minister continued:
"The farming industry can be proud of its achievements and what better place to put all that is best in agriculture and rural life on display than at an event like this.
The Minister was welcomed to the show by Walter Watson, President of the Castlewellan and District Agricultural Show Ltd, and during her visit, met members of the Executive Committee of the Society.
The Minister toured the Showgrounds in Castlewellan Forest Park, where she viewed the cattle and sheep judging and enjoyed childrens entries, sheep fleece competition, floral and art exhibits and home baking in the Home Industries marquee.
Speaking after her tour the Minister commented:
"Following the postponement of local Agricultural Shows last year due to Foot and Mouth Disease and the cancellation of some of the Shows this summer due to bad weather, I am delighted to see events like Castlewellan Show taking place with all the main livestock classes being represented.
