Forest Service, an agency of DARD, today announced a progress report on repairs to the Waterfall Walk in Glenariff Forest Park, Glenariff, Co. Antrim.

Access to the riverside walk from the Glenariff Forest Park car park and to the waterfall walk from the entrance at Manor Lodge restaurant is now available. However repairs are still on-going to a section of the walkway.

Repairs to date have involved a considerable amount of additional rock stabilisation work to ensure public safety. Further complicated engineering works will be completed over the next few months with the whole lower section of the Walkway now expected to be completed and open to the public by July 2003.

Other refurbishment work within the Park will also be ongoing over the next year, but should not affect enjoyment of the 6 kilometres of walks, open to visitors, in addition to the Waterfall Walk.

NOTES TO EDITORS

1. Forest Service closed a section of the Waterfall walk to the public in autumn 2001 for safety reasons on the basis of health and safety advice received as part of an independent engineering inspection and report.

2. Forest Service initiated plans in liaison with DFP Construction Service to make effective use of the funds available.

3. Other paths and walks within the Forest Park, totalling some 6 kilometres in all remain largely unaffected by the repair work on the Walkway.

4. Access to the riverside walk from the Glenariff Forest car park and to the waterfall walk from the entrance at Manor Lodge restaurant should be available by Easter 2003. However, a section of the walkway immediately upstream of the waterfall is still undergoing repair. It is expected to be open to the public by July 2003.
