The Forest Service would like to remind farmers that the closing date for applications under the Short Rotation Coppice (SRC) Challenge Fund is 1 August 2005, for planting in 2006 and 2007.

SRC is a specialised form of forestry which involves growing high yielding willow cultivars at close spacing and harvesting them every three years for energy end-uses. The pioneering farmers who have completed their first year’s planting have already contributed to an increase in forestry cover in Northern Ireland and will in a few years time produce wood fuel for a developing energy market.

The scheme is operated as a challenge fund, which requires applicants to bid competitively for funds to establish coppice. A judging panel will meet to choose highest quality projects, offering best value for money. Successful applicants will have to demonstrate that their sites are suitable to grow SRC, and through completion of a business plan, demonstrate the financial viability of their project, and the existence of an energy end use for their produce. Applicants also have to demonstrate that they have addressed both social and environmental impacts of their proposed project.

Farmers considering making an application should remember that the closing date this year is 1 August at 10am. The Forest Service is ready to receive applications now and advises any prospective applicants to allow themselves plenty of time to complete the application form. For further information and application forms please contact Ben Searle at Forest Service Headquarters on 028 9076 5311 or 07717 732365.
