The Forest Service has condemned an arson attack at Grange Park Forest, near Limavady, which has cost the organisation £250,000.
Two timber harvesting machines, owned by the Forest Service, were destroyed.
A spokesperson from the Forest Service said: “These machines were purchased specifically to thin out forests, which increases the amount of light available to plants and wildlife, making them more attractive for visitors and more valuable as a timber resource. The harvesters are very important tools in carrying out this work and also in making timber supplies available to local businesses. Local timber customers will feel knock-on effects from disrupted timber supplies.
“The machines cannot readily be replaced, however we will do all we can to re-programme works and minimise the disruption as far as possible. However, there will be environmental losses and delays to our work as well as the financial impacts. The Police have already appealed for information, and we endorse the steps they are taking to solve this crime.”
