The leaves are turning golden, the berries are ripening, the weather is changeable, autumn is upon us once again and there is no better place to see it than Glenariff Forest Park in the Antrim Hills. On Sunday 24th September there will be walks and stories to celebrate the autumn season. Liz Weir will be telling stories about the forest, and the Forest Service Guides will be there to talk about the Red Squirrels and other things to be found in the forest.
Sunday 24th September
For the early-birds, a guided walk will begin at 11:30am.
Storytelling in the Exhibition Centre runs from 2:30 till 3:30pm.
Another dander will be led by a guide at 3:45pm.
The Waterfall Walk (3km/2mls) follows the Glenariff River as it tumbles down from the mountain. The path is cut into the near vertical sides of the glen at “ess na laragh” (the fall of the mare), and the boardwalk on stilts continues on down to where the Glenariff River is joined by the Inver River.
At this time of year the Red Squirrels are often seen in this area of the forest as they take their fill of the hazel nuts and berries. “Red Squirrel Scavenger Hunt” sheets will be available for those interested in looking for signs of the Red Squirrels. The route continues back up through the forest to the car park.
Liz Weir’s storytelling sessions are not to be missed. Liz travels the world telling stories from here, there and yonder. Her animal stories are often good fun, sometimes including chants and rhymes for all to join in. The older stories are fascinating, usually with a twist at the end.
If the weather is good, you could try for the last barbecue of the year. Or just take it easy and enjoy the catering of the Glenariff Café in comfort.
What a wonderful combination of fresh air and exercise, stories and gossip, and good food.
Don’t miss out.
