To help celebrate the Tree Council’s National Tree Week children from schools in Warrenpoint have been invited to help Forester Brendan Mulholland and Forest Service staff to plant oak trees in a recently cleared area of Rostrevor Wood.

Six years ago acorns were collected from the ancient oak trees in Rostrevor Forest and these were planted in the Forest Service tree nursery at Castlederg, Co. Tyrone. The young trees are now ready to come home and be planted out.

The Oak Wood at Rostrevor has been declared a Special Area of Conservation, the highest environmental designation in the E.U. This Oak Wood is believed to be one of the last remaining remnants of the original ancient oak woods in Ireland.

Forest Service is committed to conserving this important site and extending the area covered by oak trees. In 1934 conifers were planted around an area of ancient oaks. Forest Service now intends to restore this area back to an oak wood. Small areas of conifers are now been cleared around the remaining oak trees to allow more light in and any self generated seedlings to grow. To give nature a helping hand Forest Service intend, over the coming years, to plant out further young oak in this area.

To give a sense of pride and of ownership of this important local site pupils and accompanying adults from Clontifleece, Dromore Road and St. Dallans Primary Schools, and St. Marks High School are helping with the oak tree planting.
