Forestry Act

New Forestry Act

A major part of the Forestry Act (Northern Ireland) 2010 became law on 13 September 2010. It was introduced by the Forestry (2010 Act) (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 2010. The Schedule of the Commencement Order will tell you which parts of the new Act are now in force.

Delivery Plan

The Department has produced a Delivery Plan to set out how Forest Service will deliver its General Duty under section 1 of the Forestry Act - promoting afforestation and sustainable forestry, and the enjoyment and recreational use of forestry land

Regulation of Felling

The Department is developing secondary legislation to support the introduction of a felling licence system. Public consultation on the draft legislation took place from 24 March to 23 June 2011. The Department will give full consideration to responses received from the consultation.

Public Right of Pedestrian Access

The Department is developing modern byelaws to support this right becoming law. Public consulation on the draft byelaws took place from 24 March to 23 June 2011. The Department will give full consideration to responses received from the consultation.

Woodland Register

An important information tool in the aim to double forest cover over the next fifty years will be an accurate register of the location and size of our woodlands and the types of trees in them. The collection of this information is in progress.

Compulsory Acquisition

The new Act contains a power to compulsorily acquire land for access purposes.
