Consultation on the implementation of the National Control Programme for Turkey Breeding and Fattening Flocks
The National Control Programme (NCP) for turkey flocks implements EU Regulations 584/2008 and 2160/2003 which set out enhanced monitoring and controls for Salmonella in breeding and fattening flocks. It aims to ensure that the start of the food chain is almost completely free of Salmonellas of public health significance and through this reducing the risk to public health.
By January 2010 all Member States will be required to have a NCP in place for turkey breeding and fattening flocks. The NCP should ensure that chicks and hatching eggs are from breeding flocks which have been tested free of Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. It should also ensure that birds from fattening flocks will have been tested free of Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium.
It should also enable the turkey flock sector to build on its success in the protection of human health by ensuring that all EU producers operate to standards which are consistent and comparable across the EU.
The deadline for responses to this consultation is 24 January 2010.
