Amendments to the Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations
DARD intends to make a number of amendments to Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations (WASK) to help ensure a smooth transition to the new arrangements to be put in place with the full implementation of EU Regulation 1099/2009.
The proposed amendments will:
- Permit the use of a wider range of gas mixtures for poultry slaughter where this does not compromise welfare standards;
- Permit the wider use of gas on farm as a mass culling method for poultry; and
- Allow prosecutions to be brought up to twelve months after the Department becomes aware of the alleged offence (bringing WASK into line with the Welfare of Animals Act (NI) 2011.
The consultation started on 4th July and will close on 26th September.
