Council Directive 2006/88/EC on animal health requirements for aquaculture animals and products thereof and the prevention and control of certain diseases in aquatic animals was adopted on 24 October 2006 and comes into force on 1 August 2008. It replaces the current aquatic animal health regime established by Council Directive 91/67/EEC.
The consultation invites comments on the Department’s proposals for implementing the Directive in Northern Ireland as part of the process of determining the final policy and the regulations required to bring the new rules into force. It is proposed that the regulations brought forward to implement the Directive in Northern Ireland will replace the existing Fish Health Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998 and the Diseases of Fish (Control) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1996 (as amended).
