Unlicensed Fishing for Crabs and Lobsters Regulations (NI) 2006
Details of this consultation, and particular aspects on which the Department would welcome views, can be obtained by following the links at the bottom of the page.
The purpose of this consultation is to advise you that the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development propose to introduce the above-named regulations to regulate unlicensed fishing for certain species of crabs and lobsters. The regulations also prohibit the use of stock boxes set by unlicensed fishermen, and require sites of pots to be marked and the marker labelled with the name of the owner of the pots.
It is proposed to make this regulation under section 124 (1) and (2) of the Fisheries Act (Northern Ireland) 1966. Any person who commits an offence under section 124 of the Fisheries Act (Northern Ireland) 1966 is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 5 on the standard scale (currently £5,000).
Another proposal suggested to the Department is the use of a permit scheme to regulate and manage the extent of fishing activity by hobby or unlicensed fishermen. Permits would be available from Fisheries Division. The Department will consider this proposal separately and requests your views on the content and operation of such a scheme.
