Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a procedure for considering the potential environmental effects of changes to land use in Northern Ireland.
DARD is the competent authority for applying the rules – the Environmental Impact Assessment (Agriculture) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2007. These limit the circumstances in which you can bring uncultivated land or semi-natural areas into intensive agricultural use.
These regulations take into account farming needs and only apply to projects likely to have significant environmental effects. Many standard agricultural operations will not be affected. They are designed to complement other environmental initiatives and to reinforce good farming practice.
