Fish Culture Licensing
Under the terms of the Fisheries Act (Northern Ireland) 1966 as amended, we are responsible for the licensing of fish and shellfish farms in Northern Ireland.
It is an offence to operate a fish farm without a fish culture licence or breach a condition attached to the licence. Any person in breach of this legislation is liable on summary conviction to a maximum fine not exceeding level 4 on the standard scale. (Currently £2,500).
In addition to the requirements under the Fisheries Act (NI) 1966, the Aquatic Animal Health Regulations (NI) 2009 provides that aquaculture production businesses are required to be authorised by the Department. Further information on this can be obtained by visiting the appropriate link below.
