Conservation of Scallop Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2008
The new scallop conservation Regulations came into operation on 17th November 2008.
These Regulations revoke and replace The Sea Fish (Minimum) (No.2) Order (Northern Ireland) 1983, The Conservation of Scallops Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1997 and The Inshore Fishing (Daily Closed Time for Scallops) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2000 and include the following changes that should be noted:
- A reduction in the permitted scallop fishing time from Monday to Friday to between 0600 -2000 hours, the weekend ban still applies;
- The curfrew hours and weekend ban applies to "fishing by any means" and includes divers;
- A reduction from 8 dredges per side to 6 per side;
- A maximum tow bar length of 5.5metres and is constucted in such a way as to prohibit more tha 6 scallop dredges to be attached to it at the same time;
- scallops of less than 110mm cannot be taken by diving;
- scallops of less than 110mm cannot be retained on board or landed
The Regulations apply to all British fishing boats in Northern Ireland inshore waters and that part of the Northern Ireland Zone within 12 nautical miles measured from the baselines of Northern Ireland.
