Approval for plant protection products containing paraquat was revoked in 2008

Since 11 July 2008, plant protection products containing paraquat have been withdrawn from use and can no longer be advertised, sold, supplied or used in Northern Ireland.
Authorisation for the advertisement, sale, supply and use of products containing paraquat by authorisation holders and their agents was suspended from 12 September 2007
Authorisation for the storage by any persons and for the advertisement, sale, supply and use of existing stocks, by persons other than the authorisation holder or their agents ended on 11 July 2008 for plant protection products containing paraquat.
This follows the annulment by the European Court of First Instance of Commission Directive 2003/112/EC, which provided for inclusion of paraquat in the list of substances that can be authorised for use in plant protection products in the European Community.
