Plant Health for Northern Ireland
The Department implements Plant Health legislation in Northern Ireland. This includes approval of businesses for passporting, surveys for non-indigenous pests and diseases.
Also the import inspection, inspections of arable crops, nurseries, garden centres and other horticulture businesses for quarantine pests and diseases and control and elimination of serious pests and diseases.
DARD is currently managing an outbreak of P. ramorum disease affecting Japanese Larch in a number of forest/woodland sites.
Specific requirements for control of the disease in the Japanese Larch are communicated directly to woodland owners affected by the disease - these will include measures such as restriction of access to the sites, felling of the trees and disposal of the wood and by-products under licence, in an approved manner.
DARD is also currently managing a number of outbreaks of Phytophthora lateralis. Further information is available below.
