Since 2005, farmers have been able to complete and submit their annual Single Application either on paper or online. Although uptake of the online option generally has been low, the promotion of its use has realised a year-on-year increase in the number of electronic applications. For 2010, 3,585 (9% of the total received) were online applications, with the target for 2011 set at 5,000. It is unlikely that this figure will increase significantly without Departmental intervention. To increase participation in its online application service and to accrue both the benefits to the customer and the savings that this process would ultimately realise, it is proposed to make application online compulsory from 2015.
