Summary:

The AFBI Environment and Renewable Energy Centre, allocated £1.8m over the years 2008/09 – 2010/11, will carry out research on the following approved projects: <BR /> • maximising the biogas output from the anaerobic digestion of animal manures;<BR /> • the bioremediation of farm dirty water through short rotation willows being grown for biomass production;<BR /> • the establishment and management of miscanthus as an energy crop;<BR /> • methods for harvesting and utilising forest brash for energy;<BR /> • evaluation of systems for harvesting, drying and storage of SRC willow and other biomass crops;<BR /> • the performance of solar panels in delivering hot water for dairy parlours; and<BR /> • evaluation of reductions in carbon emissions resulting from the adoption of renewable energy schemes at AFBI Hillsborough.
