Faughan Valley Area Based Project

£1.3 Million Investment for North West Rural Economy

Rural areas of the east bank of the River Foyle have received a £1.3 million investment. The Faughan Valley Area Based Programme aims to protect and enhance the environment and tourism infrastructure of the area around the Faughan River. Funding was awarded under the EU Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity (BSP) and the Integrated Development Fund (IDF).

The Faughan Valley Area Based Programme, located in the rural wards of the Derry City Council area, is being managed by RAPID (Rural Area Partnership In Derry). The Programme was awarded £816,152.83 under the EU Programme for Building Sustainable Prosperity (BSP) administered by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s (DARD) Rural Development Programme, and £300,000 under the IDF (Integrated Development Fund).

The funding is aimed at using the Faughan River and its surrounding area as a means to renew a rural area. The money will be used to develop the area in an environmentally sensitive way through the promotion of new tourism initiatives. It will make this scenic area accessible to all and bring real dividends to the local economy.

Planned developments for the Faughan Valley area include the enhancement of angling facilities along the River Faughan, including parking; a walking/access strategy and new habitat action plans for selected sites. In addition the Programme will produce environmental and heritage focused literature for the rural wards of Derry City Council area.
