What is the Natural Resource Rural Tourism Initiative (NRRTI)?

The Natural Resource Rural Tourism ( NRRT ) Initiative is a special initiative within the PEACE II Programme, designed to help Northern Ireland's disadvantaged rural areas take advantage of particular opportunities presented by their natural resources. It aims to develop the tourism potential of such areas, in the context of greater political stability.

One of many adverse consequences of years of unrest in Northern Ireland has been low visitor numbers and retarded development of the tourism industry in rural areas. In particular, the tourism potential of Northern Ireland's natural resources has remained largely untapped. The investment necessary to provide the infrastructure, skills and facilities, which form the core of a sustainable tourism product, has not materialised. Special funding is required to put in place some of the tourism infrastructure that would have developed over the last thirty years in the absence of the political unrest and violence.
