Rural Champion
In April 2008 the Executive agreed to the development of the Rural Champion concept, reinvigoration of the rural proofing process and support for the development of a Rural White Paper.
The Rural Champion Concept, and the enhancement of Rural Proofing is an objective for the Department under Programme for Government 2008-2011 (PSA17) and was developed to meet four key aims.
- Develop a joined up approach to rural policy making across government;
- Ensure robust application of rural proofing and the championing of rural issues;
- Ensuring equitable access to services and programmes by rural communities;
- Develop an evidence base that clearly identifies the socio-economic and environmental needs of rural communities.
Proposals for the Rural Champion concept and reinvigoration of rural proofing were developed along six key roles and were subject to a public consultation from August – November 2008.
Proposals have now been passed by both the Agriculture and Rural Development Committee and the Executive and work on implementing these proposals has now begun.
