Flood alleviation scheme to start in Londonderry
Work on a £40,000 flood alleviation scheme at Lowry’s Lane Park in Derry is to commence next week.
The scheme, being undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Rivers Agency, is expected to complete within six weeks and will reduce the flood risk to properties in the Glen Bank Road and Hatmore Park areas.
Jonathan McKee, Rivers Agency’s Western Regional Engineer, said:
“The project involves replacing 140m of culvert which conveys the Springtown Stream through Derry City Council playing fields and adjacent properties. This will improve the current drainage system and reduce the risk of flooding in the area.
“The works will be fenced off so the public shouldn’t experience any significant disruption when using Lowry’s Lane Park.”
Rivers Agency manages a 340 kilometre network of underground watercourse culverts throughout Northern Ireland. To ensure that the culvert network continues to protect people and property from flooding, the Agency has a rolling programme of similar repair work across Northern Ireland.
