Flood alleviation scheme to start in Lurgan
Work on a £50,000 flood alleviation scheme at Shane Park, off the Banbridge Road in Lurgan, is to commence on Monday 15 November.
The scheme, being undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Rivers Agency, is expected to complete within four weeks and will reduce the flood risk to 24 properties in the area.
Conor Mallon, Rivers Agency’s Area Engineer, said:
“The project involves replacing a culvert along the Tisogue Drain, a stream which runs under Shane Park. This will increase the capacity of the drainage system which will reduce the risk of flooding previously experienced in the area during heavy periods of rain.
“To facilitate this work there will be some necessary lane closures on Shane Park for approximately two weeks. Access will be maintained via a single lane controlled by traffic lights however some delays will be inevitable and we ask that motorists be patient as we undertake these repair works.”
Rivers Agency manages a 340 kilometre network of underground watercourse culverts throughout Northern Ireland. To ensure that the culvert network continues to protect people and property from flooding, the Agency has a rolling programme of similar repair work across Northern Ireland.
