Technology projects

CAFRE demonstrates and assists adoption of cut flower and foliage species and their systems of production to interested farmers and growers.
Students attending Floristry courses at Greenmount Campus also have first hand exposure to the range of varieties for use in their floral arrangements.

Current technology projects

  • Cut Flower Peony Project
Peony lactoflora is becoming a very popular seasonally available cut flower within the UK. A range of varieties of Paeonia lactiflora are being currently being evaluated and demonstrated at Greenmount Campus and at growers’ holdings, as to their suitability for commercial production under Northern Ireland conditions.
  • Cut Foliage Project
A range of outdoor foliage and cut flower species are being evaluated and demonstrated at Greenmount Campus and at growers’ holdings, as to their suitability under local conditions, their cultural techniques and market acceptability.
  • Cut Flower Hydrangea Project
Hydrangea macrophylla is a popular species as a cut flower and is in great demand by the florists especially for wedding bouquets. Hydrangea for cut flowers can come in a range of colours and hues. It can be considered a high value crop and we are evaluating a number of varieties at Greenmount Campus and growers’ holdings under tunnel and glasshouse conditions.
