Decisions made at the meeting on 28 May

Monitor farm visit 28/5/10

Decisions made by the group.
  • River field (minimal cultivation reseed), lots of weeds at present, these include chickweed, ragweed, buttercup and docks. There is little clover visible (despite 2KG per acre at sowing) and the decision was made by the group to spray the field with Forefront. Although this is not clover safe it will kill the weeds and clover could be established later in the year.
  • Back Hill (below dwelling house) has a good level of Clover present. Currently being grazed by suckler cows down to 1300 KG of Dry matter /hectare. The field is to receive 50-75 KG per acre of 20-10-10 to try to promote the perennial ryegrass now that the clover is well established. No real weed problem in this field.
  • Orchard field has been cut for silage on the 28 /5/ 10 a reasonably good crop of grass clover. Some weeds present which will hopefully die out after cutting. This field will receive bull slurry and be grazed.
  • Red clover field was sprayed in April to kill buttercup and docks. Non clover safe spray was used as there was only a small level of red clover remaining in the field and needing reinstated. The group decided to have the field sprayed again this time with forefront to eliminate weeds before re-establishing the red clover. The group was of the opinion to use a 50percent red clover  50percent large leafed white clover mix and if needed a small quantity of hybrid grass. Fertiliser requirements for second cut as listed for Hayfields.
  • Hayfields have been cut for silage and doing well. Will receive  24-6-12 if no slurry is applied for second cut or 25-0-5 if slurry is applied.
  • Corner field has again a dock problem despite being sprayed several times with clover safe Eagle/Squire over this past couple of years. Although there is reasonable clover levels it was decided to spray the field with Doxstar to tackle the docks. Clover can be re-established if the docks can be controlled.
