Heifer replacements at Greenmount Campus
At Greenmount Campus, the aim of the Future Herd is to produce replacement heifers which will have the capacity to produce relatively high yields of quality milk. Sires selected for use in the Future Herd are selected using a range of criteria described in the semen selection section.
Since the Future Herd is the amalgamation of the High Forage and Premium Milk herds, heifer replacements entering the herd before autumn 2007 were sired according to the selection criteria of those herds.

Substantial changes to the calculation of the PLI index were made in the August 2007 proof run placing more emphasis on components functional traits. This has led to considerable change in the average PLI of cows in the Future Herd.
