Heifer rearing and management
Heifer rearing
Heifers destined for the High Forage Herd are reared as part of the Dairy Heifer 2000 programme. Target age and weight pre-calving is 24 months and 600 kilos respectively. More detailed information on heifer rearing can be found within the heifer rearing project, Dairy Heifer 2000.
Heifer management
First lactation heifers are housed separately during the winter period. This reduces bullying from older stock and helps improve silage intake and fertility management. Research has shown lactation yield benefits from separate housing and management of first lactation heifers of 500 litres.
