Animal health

The animal health routine carried out with the High Forage Herd involves vaccinations for leptospirosis and salmonella.
Lameness prevention involves a range of measures including: cubicle design to optimise lying time; frequent passage scraping to avoid slurry heel; laneway maintenance with quarry dust; weekly foot-bathing with copper sulphate (bluestone) and formalin alternately; foot trimming first lactation heifers prior to spring turnout to remove excessive horn growth; hoof examination and foot trimming at drying off if necessary; and housing first lactation heifers separately to avoid bullying.
