Weaning to service interval
The following checklist identifies factors that can
result in a reduction in the weaning to service interval.
- Aim to reduce weight loss during lactation. If sows are losing body condition assess feed intake.
- Feed at least 4 kg/day of a lactation diet from weaning to day of service. Feed intake can be increased by moving the piglets first at weaning and leaving the sow for 12 hours and continuing to feed lactation feed levels.
- Provide good contact with a boar. (heat detection)
- Measure water flow and availability. Adult sows drink 8-12 litres/day. If water is supplied through a nipple drinker aim to provide 1.5 2 litres/minute.
- Allow at least 3 m2 (30 sq ft)/sow in the service area. In loose housed accommodation avoid mixing gilts and first parity sows with older sows.
- Provide 16 hours of light.
- Avoid draughts in the service area and maintain a temperature of 16-20oC.
- Ensure all feed is fresh. Regularly remove uneaten feed from the sows trough. To prevent mycotoxins ensure feed barrows are protected from the rain and that feed bins are regularly cleaned.
