Big bale silage - a summary

  • Making big bale silage is a convenient way of conserving small amounts of grass
  • Aim to ensile leafy, high DM (over 25 percent) grass
  • Produce a well shaped, dense bale
  • Wrap bales immediately after baling at the point of storage
  • Avoid puncturing the bale wrap
  • Store the bale on a hard, even surface and use netting and bait to reduce damage by birds and vermin
  • Remove any moulds and decayed silage from the bales prior to feeding
