Big bale silage - a summary
- Making big bale silage is a convenient way of conserving small amounts of grass
- Aim to ensile leafy, high DM (over 25 percent) grass
- Produce a well shaped, dense bale
- Wrap bales immediately after baling at the point of storage
- Avoid puncturing the bale wrap
- Store the bale on a hard, even surface and use netting and bait to reduce damage by birds and vermin
- Remove any moulds and decayed silage from the bales prior to feeding
