Pesticides - What's in store?
Kevin O’Donnell CAFRE, Greenmount Campus
If your business is involved in the sale, supply or storage of over 200 litres of pesticide then by law you or a member of staff must hold a Certificate of Competence in storage.
To obtain this Certificate you need to successfully complete a 2-day Nominated Storekeepers (NSK) course, which is delivered, assessed and awarded by BASIS.
The next NSK course will run at The College of Agriculture Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus on the 24th and 25th February 2009.
Some of the topics covered in the course are
- Handling pesticide in and out of the store
- Segregating pesticides
- Poisons
- Taking care of the store and it’s contents
- Taking care of the storekeeper
- Accidents, first aid, safe lifting

Myles McGeown of JF McKenna in Armagh completed the course in 2007. He commented ”I learned a lot on the course from the basic tips of storing liquids below powders and what to do about spillages to issues on first aid for those contaminated with pesticide. The course also brought home to me the limited environmental impact sprays have if they are handled correctly”
If you are interested in doing the NSK course you can contact Greenmount Campus at (028) 9442 6631 or you can get further information by searching for “NSK” on the CAFRE website at www.cafre.ac.uk/
