Employment Law for Horticulture Businesses
Graeme Cross, Top Fruit Development Adviser, Greenmount Campus
Horticulture growers from the top fruit, vegetable and mushroom sectors attended a recent workshop on employment law which was part of the ‘Grow Your Business’, training programme developed by CAFRE. This training programme, which covers a range of topics relevant to horticulture producers, is designed to develop the skills of growers and their families to grow their horticulture businesses
Ciara Dooris, director in the employment law team of Tughans Solicitors, Belfast, delivered a comprehensive briefing on employment law focusing on the following six key areas; statement of particulars and employment status, pay and minimum wage, holidays and holiday pay, hours of work, breaks and rest periods, and maternity leave. Ciara’s experience allowed her to highlight the most importance points for business compliance and best practice, with particular emphasis on horticultural concerns.
Growers attending the workshop have a better understanding of key requirements of employment law and greatly appreciated Ciara’s extensive knowledge in this specialist area.
