Training is the key to unlocking maximum pig performance

Mark Hawe, Pig Technologist, Greenmount Campus

In today’s environment, pig producers continually strive to maximise output from their unit as effectively as possible.  Although genetics, nutrition and herd health all play important roles, management is key to achieving this goal!  Attention to detail at all levels, from stock people to unit managers, is essential.
On pig units, new stock people are often shown what to do but not explained why. Also they become “experts” in one stage of production such as growing or finishing pigs but would like to develop their skills in other areas such as service or farrowing management. To help with this, Pig Technologists at CAFRE plan to hold another course on “Basic Pig Production” for unit stock people.  This training will focus on a range of practical areas on gilt and sow production including gilt selection, service, farrowing and feeding.  Andrew McCrea, who operates a large sow unit near Stewartstown and is a “Focus Farmer” will also take part in this training.  He will use a DVD showing working practices on his unit to describe how he achieves high output from his sow herd.
This course, which has been requested by the industry, will be held at Loughry Campus, Cookstown on 9 June commencing at 1.00pm.  If you or your stock people would like more details please contact Mark Hawe on 028944 26768 or Liz Donnelly on 028944 26767.

Mark Hawe and Andrew McCrea discuss aspects of sow management, which will be covered in the forthcoming course on Basic Pig Production.
