Cut flower and foliage training programme

You are invited to a cut flower and foliage training programme consisting of four workshops commencing on Tuesday 9 June at 7 pm at the Horticulture Development Centre, Greenmount Campus, Antrim entitled ‘Growing and Marketing cut flowers and foliage’.
Week 1.  Tuesday 9 June 7.00 to 9.30pm
  • Overview of the cut flower market that can be supplied from Northern Ireland
  • Overview of facilities and equipment are required to grow and to market cut flowers or foliage
  • Practical workshop to include:
    • Introduction to growing cut flower peonies including a viewing of the Greenmount peony variety screening project
    • Soil preparation, weed control methods, crop support, irrigation and feeding  for growing flowers under protected structures
    • Planting a cut flower bloom chrysanthemum crop.
Week 2.  Thursday 20 August 7.00 to 10.00pm
  • Caring for your customer and managing flower and foliage sales
  • A to Z of Sweet William production
  • Practical workshop to include:
    • taking cuttings and crop management of cut flowers and foliages
    • sowing seeds and planting a cut flower Sweet William crop
Week 3.  October Wednesday provisional date of 21 October 2pm to 5pm to be confirmed
  • Exploring the market opportunities for cut flowers and foliage
  • Overview of flowers that are being grown in Northern Ireland
  • A to Z of Standard Bloom natural season chrysanthemum production
  • Practical workshop to include:
    • Harvesting, post harvest care of cut flowers and  foliages.
Week 4.  Late October provisional date Wednesday 4 November 2pm to 5pm to be confirmed
  • Overview of foliage crops grow well under Northern Ireland conditions
  • A to Z culture of two of the most promising foliage crops
  • Tour of the Greenmount Campus foliage trials to update on what species have performed well.
  • A florist perspective on the use of locally produced foliage.
Please note that CAFRE’s health and safety policy states that all participants in practical sessions must wear coveralls and steel toe-capped protective footwear.
