June Agricultural Census

The annual census of agricultural and horticultural holdings in Northern Ireland occurs on 1st June.  Information collected on the forms relates to livestock numbers, crop areas and the numbers of workers on that date. The annual census provides DARD with a snapshot of agricultural activity in Northern Ireland, giving an invaluable insight to the changes between years within the sector.  Similar surveys are also being carried out among farmers in England, Scotland and Wales.
The census provides Ministers with essential information in developing and monitoring policies for the industry.  It is one of many mechanisms by which DARD fulfils EU regulations on information relating to agriculture and horticulture. Census information is highly valued by industry and trade organisations in identifying likely changes to output, thus enabling these organisations to provide advice to farmers to assist in the planning of future agricultural activity with more confidence.
Results of previous Agricultural Census are available in full on the DARD websiteLink to external website . Spreadsheets containing the key results for each year from 1981 to 2009 appear on the same site.
