5,000 Farmers Using The Farm Nutrient Management Calculators
George Mathers, Greenmount Campus, CAFRE
Since the launch of these two calculators during March 2005, the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise is delighted to announce that the websites have been accessed by over 5,000 farmers and have received over 20,000 hits in total.
The calculators, which are available on-line and are free, were developed with funds allocated from Vision. The calculators were developed to help farmers calculate organic nitrogen loading and slurry storage capacity for their farms in response to the proposed Nitrates Directive Action Programme measures.
The Organic Manure Nitrogen Loading Calculator is designed to help farmers estimate Organic Manure Nitrogen Loading based on the land area farmed and nitrogen produced from livestock and/or imports and exports of slurry or manure.
The Slurry and Manure Storage Calculator helps farmers to estimate weekly slurry, dirty water and manure production, current storage capacity and additional storage capacity required.
The programs are available on the Ruralni Portal. Select Online Services and then Secure Online Services to access the programs. If you are a first time user follow the instructions for registration. The calculators are easy to use, secure and confidential and are available 24 hours a day.
The calculators have been developed jointly by CAFRE and AFBI Information Technologists and funded by Vision.
