Local farmers and growers learn about growing and marketing locally produced cut flowers

David Davidson, Cut Flower Development Adviser, Greenmount Campus, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise

Local farmers and growers considering diversifying into the production of cut flowers, recently attended a four day practical course organised by Greenmount Campus.
The participants on the course received a practical learning experience on how to plant, grow and harvest a range of cut flowers that can be produced in tunnels under Northern Ireland conditions. Participants were also taught about ensuring continuity of supply, marketing to local wholesalers and working out the cost of production to ensure profitability.
David Davidson, Development Adviser at Greenmount Campus said “Participants learnt about the potential opportunity to supply consumers in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland with locally produced cut flowers to meet the increasing consumer demand for high quality, freshly harvested locally produced flowers. This was an excellent opportunity for new and existing growers to develop their practical skills and knowledge throughout the growing season”.
