Green compost as a peat alternative
Teresa Maguire, Horticulture Technologist, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Greenmount Campus
A demonstration was held at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise, Greenmount Campus on the 14 June to show the performance of first year flowering perennials in peat reduced growing medium.
Ornamental plant growers evaluated the performance of various species in reduced peat composts containing different percentages of green compost made from recycled green waste and composted bark.
According to Teresa Maguire, Horticulture Technologist at Greenmount Campus, "Observations so far have shown that these species perform equally well in peat reduced growing medium made with 25 percent green compost. However, green compost will have to be carefully composted in a controlled way to ensure a consistent product"
