Dipping Sheep – Keep yourself right
Kevin O’Donnell CAFRE, Greenmount Campus, Short Course Manager
If you intend buying sheep dip in the near future or are planning to dip sheep soon you are legally required to get yourself a Certificate of Competence in the Safe Use of Sheep Dips.
If you successfully complete a Safe Use of Sheep Dips course you will be awarded this certificate. CAFRE, Greenmount Campus is currently organizing one of these courses for mid September. The course covers the following areas:
- Knowledge of the parasites to be controlled
- How to keep yourself, other workers and the general public safe from the chemicals
- How to avoid contamination of the environment
- Looking after your sheep
- The dip products that can be used
- What makes a good sheep dipper
The course also covers in detail how to dispose of the used sheep dip, a job any farmer will want to do correctly as failure to do so may result in penalties being applied to their Single Farm Payment.
Pat McNamee a sheep farmer and instructor on the course is well aware of the need for farmers who dip their sheep to attend the course: “OK you need to do the course if you want to buy dip but the course is good to do in its own right. It helps you work out the right amount of dip you need for your dipper. It also gives you a lot of guidance on how to keep yourself, your stock and the general public safe from the quite dangerous chemicals you are using”.
For the price of a gallon of dip you can become an accredited sheep dipper enabling you to buy and use sheep dip for the foreseeable future. If you would like further information on or would like an application form for the Safe use of Sheep Dips course being organized by CAFRE, Greenmount Campus please contact Charlene Graffin at Greenmount, telephone: 028 9442 6704.
