Improve your Farm Welding skills at CAFRE
Kevin O’Donnell, College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE), Greenmount Campus
“I have improved by 100%”, that is just one comment from a trainee that completed a Basic Farm Welding course at CAFRE recently.
If you think you too could improve your farm welding skills or even if you have never lifted a welding rod in your life, then the Basic Farm Welding course could be for you. The tutor for the course is Tom Nelson and trainees remarked at a recent course “that he had loads of experience” but remained “very patient and understanding”.
The courses, which will be based at the Greenmount and Enniskillen Campuses, will run during the evenings over the autumn and winter period. The course costs £64 per person to cover all the materials used and any assessment costs. The topics covered in the course include:
- Systems used for welding, cutting and heating
- Safety and personal protective clothing
- Bead Welds
- MMA and MIG welding
- Butt, Single Vee and fillet joints
There is an emphasis through the course to get the trainees up to a certain standard through being given sufficient time to “work at their own speed” ensuring they get their welding right”.
A number of the group hope to progress on to the Advanced Farm Welding course over the winter where they will cover skills such as MIG corner joints, oxyacetylene welding, vertical and overhead welds and the fabrication of a piece of agricultural equipment.
At the end of the Basic Farm Welding course, if the work is of a sufficient standard a trainee will be awarded a certificate at NVQ level 2 by the Open College Network for Northern Ireland
